Julius Feldmeier, center, in “Nothing Bad Can Happen,” written and directed by Katrin Gebbe.
HOLLYWOOD---Don’t believe the title: “Nothing Bad Can Happen” is a veritable smorgasbord of bad, at least for Tore (Julius Feldmeier), the newest member of a punk-rock Christian commune in Hamburg, Germany. A lightning rod for hurt who believes his epileptic seizures are visits from the Holy Spirit, Tore glows with the kind of unshakable faith that can make those around him feel wanting. Horrifically unpleasant (and, according to the publicity notes, “inspired by atrocious true events”), this first feature by Katrin Gebbe takes stamina to watch. Pitting good against evil with striking intelligence and a near-operatic commitment to extreme suffering, Ms. Gebbe neither mocks nor celebrates Tore’s love for his God. Neither does she give any hint that it’s reciprocated. [link]
