CALIFORNIA---Israeli-American painter, and Israel Defense Forces veteran, Tomer Peretz, 32, was selected for the inaugural Arthur Szyk Prize of Disruptive Thought and Zionist Art, the organizers of the award told The Algemeiner on Monday. Peretz’s work was selected out of more than 100 submissions for the $1,000 award, announced last year, that aims to provide more exposure to young artists by recognizing work that “challenges the static conception of Zionism with ideas that extend beyond the work of art itself.” The jury of The Arthur Szyk Prize included [Craig] Dershowitz, [Ashley] Rindsberg, and [Allison] Chang, as well as David Laxer, founder of Tel Aviv design and branding firm Brandalism, and Deborah Danino, Tel Aviv University PhD Candidate in French Literature. Australia’s Most Significant Thematic Christian Art Prize

Posted on 10:03 by tripal h
ONLINE OPINION
By Peter Sellick
2004 Mandorla Art Award Winner: Michael Kane Taylor, "Pedilavium", Digital print on paper on canvas.
AUSTRALIA---It is the aim of the Mandorla Art Award to challenge artists to create art that is a response to a set reading from Scripture. By doing this we hope to encourage works that belongs to the great tradition of Christian art that attempts to deepen the faith. We find it an irony that although art in the Latin West and Orthodox East found its beginning in this tradition, very little art in this vein is now produced. Moreover, churches now rarely commission art whose function it is to enrich the imagination of worshippers. There are exceptions, the windows of the Roman Catholic cathedral in Bunbury, produced by the late Robert Juniper being one excellent example. [link]

The Mandorla Art Award exhibition will be open to the public between the 19th and the 27th July at Linton and Kay Galleries 137 St Georges Tce. Perth. Details may be found at http://www.mandorlaart.com.

The collection is a finalist in the Collaboration of Design + Art (COD+A) Awards process as one of the Top 100 projects for 2014.  "These are truly outstanding" said Ginger Bievenour, vice chair for Alpha Omega Arts. "I went to the website and found much to vote for - I'll go back and look more carefully again at the different categories and opportunities for casting a vote. Linda is good, there is no doubt about that!"
